Chapman University and Parasoft partner to Support the Software Engineering Program

09.15.2015

Chapman University and Parasoft have entered into an agreement that will allow Chapman University Software Engineering majors to have access to Parasoft’s tools and products at no cost. Parasoft is an industry-leading company focused on enterprise products for automated software testing and analysis. This collaboration will allow students to test their code for errors or areas for improvement, through Parasoft’s analysis.

“Access to Parasoft gives our students hands on experience with real industry tools,” said Erik Linstead, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Software Engineering at Chapman University. “This experience better prepares them for entering the workforce where they won’t be learning about these tools at their first employer. Further, tools like these can often be cost prohibitive for academic institutions– Parasoft’s generosity will help Chapman produce graduates with real-world skills.”

Specifically, the Parasoft analytical tools will be available to software engineering students taking classes in their major. However, Parasoft will also be made available in a lab, which allows all Chapman University computational science majors to access the tool, as well. Students in these majors generally complete several large-scale, collaborative software development projects before graduation. Additionally, M.S. and Ph.D. students in Chapman’s Computational and Data Science Programs often build large software systems to support their thesis research. The ability to leverage Parasoft’s static analysis tools will allow students to carry out development more efficiently, as well as improve the quality of the end products.

“This is an exciting opportunity to share our technology with the next generation of software professionals,” said Parasoft CEO Elizabeth Kolawa. “We hope that when students get a first-hand look at how automated tools can help them spend less time debugging and more time on the creative aspects of software engineering, they’ll recognize that the best practices they are learning about are indeed feasible—and essential—to apply in real world software development.”

Chapman University officially launched its Bachelor’s of Science degree in software engineering in the fall of 2015. This is part of Chapman’s bigger foray into the sciences, and in particular STEM degrees. More on Chapman University Consistently ranked among the top universities in the West, Chapman University provides a uniquely personalized and interdisciplinary educational experience to highly qualified students.
